How to make the DoD a better satcoms customer

08 April 2019: In a contributed article for National Defense Magazine’s April issue, Inmarsat Government’s Senior Vice President of Government Strategy and Policy, Rebecca Cowen-Hirsch, discusses the need for the U.S. Department of Defense to acquire modern, commercially provided options to readily obtain mission-critical mobile and highly available capabilities.

Cowen-Hirsch highlights that the one-size-fits-all approach prevents users from leveraging the full range of solutions, inclusive of managed services with predicable performance service level agreements that will enable them to do their jobs. Additionally, she discusses the importance of creating a fully integrated architecture with a “commercial first” approach as well as embracing satellite communications as a service.

“This has set the standard as a satellite acquisition model for the modern age, enabling servicemen and women anytime, anywhere ready access to robust and resilient capabilities at time and place of their choice,” Cowen-Hirsch wrote.
