01 August 2017: The pivotal role of connectivity will come into sharp focus at London International Shipping Week 2017 (LISW17), in a series of Inmarsat seminars probing the impact of digitalisation on shipping, cyber security and safety at sea.
LISW17 on 11-15 September will bring 15,000 leaders from all sectors of the global maritime industry to the UK capital to consider upcoming challenges and opportunities. Inmarsat has been diamond sponsor of LISW since its launch in 2013, recognising its importance in showcasing all that UK businesses have to offer the international shipping market.
Inmarsat will host three highly topical debates at its City Road HQ, with keynote external speakers including acclaimed futurists Gerd Leonhard and Kate Adamson; information security expert Professor Paul Dorey; and Katy Ware, Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom to the International Maritime Organization and Director of Maritime Safety and Standards for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.
Organisations involved in maritime safety are being invited to a breakfast briefing on the evolution of Inmarsat safety services and the future of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) on Tuesday 12 September.
A half-day seminar the same day will look at how digital disruption will really shape the future of the shipping industry and supply chain. Keynote speaker Gerd Leonhard commented: “Every industry in every sector is being disrupted and transformed by exponential technological change, including the shipping and maritime industries; it just takes longer in more specialised and traditionally conservative business sectors. But when it does happen it’s often hugely more disruptive than anticipated. That time is here, now!”
On Wednesday 13 September, the final seminar will consider the cyber security risks facing the industry, and offer best practice advice from the UK National Cyber Security Centre, part of GCHQ.
Peter Broadhurst, Inmarsat Maritime Vice President Safety and Security, who will lead the session, said: “Cybercrime is real and any device connected to the internet is vulnerable; recent events demonstrate powerfully that mainstream shipping is no exception.”

The Inmarsat seminars are part of a packed agenda of over 140 industry functions and networking opportunities being held throughout London International Shipping Week, under the overarching theme of ‘Tomorrow’s Maritime World’. Other events will be held by international shipping and marine trade associations and the UK government.
A major highlight will be the one-day LISW conference on 14 September considering the challenges and opportunities ahead, at which Inmarsat CEO Rupert Pearce will speak on ‘Tomorrow’s Business Solutions’. The conference, at the Grosvenor House Hotel in Park Lane, will followed by the LISW gala dinner.
